Healthcare FM demand to hit $515.31bn by 2024

The global healthcare facilities management market is set for rapid growth, with a CAGR of 13.6% over the next five years.

That’s according to a new report from Zion Market Research, which says technological innovation in the sector, combined with increased demand from emerging markets, is driving the sector forward.

The research says North America is the largest consumer of healthcare FM among the geographies it covered, followed by Europe.

Meanwhile Asia Pacific will grow at the highest CAGR over the forecast period, at which point the global market will be worth $515.31 billion.

Zion identifies the key market players as Epic Systems Corporation, eClinicalWorks, Practice Fusion, NextGen Healthcare, Allscripts, Cerner and MEDITECH.

CCS to handle FM across defence estates

The Defence Infrastructure Organisation’s (DIO) Future Defence Infrastructure Services (FDIS) programme has announced that Crown Commercial Services (CCS) will handle the contract for housing and facilities management across defence estates.

The CCS will begin work once current arrangements end.

Each contrast will be seven years in length, with the option to extend for a further three years, subject to satisfactory performances.

The contract aims to make it easier to access a more diverse supplier base while being more efficient and better value for the taxpayer through leveraging government buying power.

This phase of the FDIS programme will procure new hard FM arrangements for four regional contracts and five contracts that will replace the current National Housing Prime.

The replacement for the current national training estate prime will be procured through a subsequent framework during the next phase of the programme.

DIO’s Commercial Director Jacqui Rock said: “DIO spends around £3 billion every year buying infrastructure services for our armed forces both in the UK and overseas. These new contracts will form a significant part of this and will provide improved value for money for the taxpayer. They will also allow us access to a wider supply base including both large multinational companies and small and medium enterprises.”

Sam Ulyatt, CCS’s Buildings Strategic Commercial Director, said: “CCS has engaged extensively to design a framework structure which meets the needs of customers and incorporates social value. Our public sector contract has also been simplified to aid procurement for customers and suppliers alike.”

The next part of the project includes an invitation to tender for suppliers on the CCS contract. Competitions will take place later in the year for companies seeking a place on the DIO project

IWFM publishes Brexit advice for employers

The Institute of Workplace & Facilities Management (IWFM) has pulled together a guide that outlines the key forthcoming changes to immigration and employment post-Brexit.

Immigration has played a key role in helping to address the growing skills gap in FM, with migrants filling one in four jobs in some sectors.

The trade body says that after Brexit, the ending of free movement of people from the EEA (EU countries plus Iceland, Norway and Liechtenstein) plus Switzerland, coupled with the Government’s proposed new immigration policy, will have profound consequences for employers needing to fill vital roles in cleaning, security, catering, construction and across the whole profession.

It has therefore outlined the key forthcoming changes to immigration rules, the dates when they come into effect and how they will affect the 3.7 million EEA citizens already living in the UK as well as those looking to come here to work.

You can download the full document here. It outlines both ‘deal’ and ‘no deal’ scenarios and the permutations of each for FM employers.

UKGBC publishes Social Value guidance for local authorities

The UK Green Building Council (UKGBC) has released its latest guidance document, detailing how local authorities can help ensure that new construction and property development in their area positively impacts people and communities by delivering social value.

‘Driving social value in new development: Options for local authorities’ is a comprehensive set of recommendations for local authorities, based on research and consultation with local government, businesses and not-for-profit experts. It is a detailed exploration of the policy mechanisms that can be used by local authorities to specify and ensure social value outcomes. Such outcomes include jobs and economic growth, health and wellbeing, environmental sustainability and strength of community.

John Alker, Director of Policy and Places at UKGBC said: “Ever since Government introduced the Social Value Act a few years ago, this topic has been rising up the agenda of both local authorities and private sector. However, there is still a long way to go before we fully grasp the opportunities presented by the concept, particularly in relation to development and regeneration.

“With the acute funding pressures faced by local authorities, as well as the growing interest in social impact investing and socially responsible business, there are strong drivers for public and private sector to work together to maximise the benefits from new development to local communities.”

The guidance covers the use of social value requirements in:

  • Local government procurement that relates to new development
  • Local planning policy
  • The disposal of local authority land

The document is available in UKGBC’s popular presentation resource format which allows local authorities to easily incorporate the organisation’s research into their own material.

As a live resource, the guidance will be updated periodically to reflect policy changes, latest thinking and new case studies. UKGBC is welcoming approaches from local authorities and other organisations wishing to contribute to the development of this resource.
