Enterprise ‘will spend $70bn on smart energy’ by end of the decade

Enterprises facing a staggering $1.73trillion global energy bill will spend $70bn on smart solutions by 2030 to achieve renewable power and energy independence.

A report from ABI Research outlines how escalating energy prices pose a formidable obstacle to businesses and industries worldwide. By 2023, those prices will surge to a global $1.73 trillion enterprise spend on electricity consumption (which considers the electrification acceleration of vehicle fleets and robots).

As a result, businesses are compelled to reassess their energy purchase agreements with utilities, contemplate installing renewable microgrid systems, and prioritise energy efficiency. To do so, enterprises will spend a the $70 billion on smart energy solutions by 2030.

The research states that smart energy is no longer just the prerogative of centralised energy utilities.

“Enterprises and industries are assuming an increasingly important role in renewable energy generation,” explained Dominique Bonte, Vice President, Verticals & End Markets at ABI Research. “They are essentially becoming agents in the building and managing of collectively owned smart energy networks, assets, and solutions. Additionally, businesses will actively participate in new (renewable) energy markets, including trading on spot markets,”

The Smart Energy for Enterprises and Industries research service looks at smart energy through the lens of both enterprises and industries such as manufacturing, supply chain, oil and gas, and data centers.

Aspects covered range from on-site solar and wind farms to energy efficiency management, Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS), and advanced Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs), enabling enterprises to lower the cost of their energy consumption, transition away from fossil fuel energy sources, improve energy quality and reliability, and achieve more energy resilience.

5 Minutes With… Ian Thresher, Regional Sales Manager at Mul-T-Lock

In the latest instalment of our FM industry executive interview series we sat down with Ian Thresher, Regional Sales Manager at Mul-T-Lock to talk about protecting customers from supply chain issues, the opportunities around touch-free security and the importance of sustainability…

Tell us about your company, products, and services.

Mul-T-lock has been manufacturing high security mechanical master key systems and electromechanical devices for several industries, including education, health care, and more, for over 50 years. We take pride in the quality of our products, which exceed a wide range of industry accreditations. Our extensive product lines are flexibility enough to develop customised systems for any application.

What have been the biggest challenges the industry has faced over the past 12 months?

The pandemic was a difficult period for all businesses, but we believed it was critical to keep in touch with our customers through frequent phone calls and ‘Teams’ meetings. It was also the trigger for raw material and freight cost rises which have since been exacerbated by the war in Ukraine. So, continuity of raw material supply and pricing as well as soaring energy costs and inflation have been and remain a challenge for all businesses and customers. This is why we continue to work tirelessly to protect our customers where possible.

And what have been the biggest opportunities?

Every day is an opportunity. You shouldn’t wait for an opportunity to arise to succeed. Create it. From an industry perspective it is tapping into the customer’s desire for high security that offers the optimum in convenience. This is why we’re seeing a growth in electromechanical solutions and sales. With SMARTair ‘Openow’ we saw customers during and post the pandemic wanting a touch free solution, a ‘key’ so to speak on their mobile phone, allowing them access to meeting rooms, hotel accommodation without interaction with people or traditional keys and credentials. We’re also seeing a surge in demand for audit trails, so eCLIQ our electromechanical solution that looks and feels like a traditional cylinder solution but smarter! Giving the customer the ability to provide and revoke access at the touch of a button, have audit trails of traffic through sensitive areas on site as well as timed access functionality.

What is the biggest priority for our industry in 2023?

The biggest priority is to provide a genuinely exceptional client experience and to go above and beyond. And, to keep innovating our service and solution offerings so we remain relevant to our customers. Proving to them that we understand the challenges they face and we have the solutions to help them today and tomorrow.

What are the main trends you are expecting to see in the market in 2023?

End users are increasingly shifting away from traditional mechanical master key systems and towards electromechanical systems such as Mul-T-locks eCLIQ and SMARTair, which provide additional security features such as audit trails, timed permissions, and access removal on lost or stolen keys.

What technology is going to have the biggest impact on the market this year?

This year, electromechanical access solutions will have a significant impact. They can be retrofitted to existing doors with mechanical cylinders, while the electromechanical solutions from Mul-T-Lock require no wiring. The added advantages increase security in ways that traditional methods cannot.

In 2025 we’ll all be talking about…?

The topic of discussion will be global warming. This has been observed in recent years, yet it is impossible to deny that the impacts of global warming are being felt. The energy revolution and the transition to a lower-carbon civilization will dominate the debate by 2025 and with it our commitment as manufacturers to act responsibly, produce sustainably and provide products that are sustainable and help reduce the carbon footprint of existing as well as future environments where are products are used.

You go to the bar at the Facilities Management Summit – what’s your tipple of choice?

Vodka or a nice glass of red wine.

What’s the most exciting thing about your job?

Aside from meeting different people and learning about their requirements, which we can easily accommodate for, the most exciting aspect of my job is observing how my efforts impact the company’s growth.

And what’s the most challenging?

Things don’t always go as planned, which is totally normal; the trick is to stay cool and resilient while correcting shortcomings as soon as feasible.

What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever been given?

Life is about managing expectations, most of all your own.

Peaky Blinders or The Mandalorian?

Mandalorian, but I do have a soft spot historical dramatisation.

Governments set to spend big on IT in 2023

Government IT spending is forecast to total $589.8 billion globally in 2023, an increase of 7.6% from 2022, with inflation and skills shortages among the top considerations for CIOs.

That’s according to research from Gartner, which says that this year they will also ensure their digital projects endure mission impact. An increasing number of government institutions are already putting in place at least one digital metric linked directly to outcomes associated with their organization’s public purpose or mission.

By 2026, Gartner foresees over 75% of governments will gauge digital transformation success by measuring the enduring mission impact.

“Global challenges like inflation and workforce scarcity and their local repercussions are testing the abilities of government CIOs to respond with appropriate service delivery mechanisms and organizational accountability,” said Apeksha Kaushik, Principal Analyst at Gartner. “In addition, the “great resignation” and the competing demand from the commercial sector have forced governments to re-examine their approaches to counterbalance internal talent scarcity.

“Governments are increasingly spending their IT budgets to replace legacy applications. Gartner’s 2023 CIO and Technology Executive Survey showed that 57% of government CIOs plan to increase funding for application modernisation in 2023, up from 42% in 2022,”

Software to Remain Highest Spending Segment in 2023

In 2023, software will continue to be the highest growing segment in 2023 (see Table 1). Application modernization investments will increase supported by more software-as-a service-based solution offerings. The use of low-code application platforms (LCAPs) is also on the rise and will further accelerate legacy modernization efforts.

Table 1. Worldwide Government IT Spending Forecast (Millions of U.S. Dollars)

Segment 2022 Spending 2022 Growth (%) 2023 Spending 2023 Growth (%)
Data Center Systems 25,760 11.1 26,623 3.3
Devices 34,224 -8.7 32,643 -4.6
Internal Services 66,940 -2.3 69,178 3.3
IT Services 191,958 3.4 209,103 8.9
Software 161,894 10.0 183,733 13.5
Telecom Services 67,583 -4.9 68,514 1.4
Total 548,359 2.9 589,794 7.6

Government spending on IT services will continue unabatedly in 2023. “Compensation constraints and limited resources to attract and retain IT talent is becoming an even bigger challenge today as many governments are facing IT talent shortage,” said Kaushik.

To continue modernizing and innovating critical IT infrastructure and applications, some government organizations will embrace a multisourced workforce strategy by optimizing the use of internal IT talent and investing in employee experience tools to empower and spark innovation, as well as partnering with external IT service providers to speed time to value.

Throughout 2023, government organizations will continue to invest in initiatives that improve access to digital services as constituents increasingly demand experiences that are equivalent to online customers.

While digital transformation remains a top priority for governments, some government CIOs have indicated they are falling short in realizing maximum benefits from their digital investments. “Government CIOs who are moving beyond scaling digital solutions across their critical services are ensuring that further investment in digital solutions can directly impact how they achieve the mission or public purpose of their organization,” said Kaushik.

Nearly half of UK businesses unaware of 2025 landline switch off

A recent survey revealed that 62.1% of UK businesses are still using landlines within their company and 45% are unaware of BT’s looming Big Switch Off deadline.

Context: At the end of 2025, businesses will no longer be able to use landlines as Openreach by BT plans to move all UK phone lines from the traditional Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN) to a fully digital network.

Although BT announced the Big Switch Off in 2015, a recent survey conducted by National Business Communications has revealed that 44.8% of businesses are not aware of the plan to phase out landlines.

The 2023 figure is an improvement from the 2021 survey, in which 59.7% of respondents confessed to not being aware of the move to routing all calls over IP (Internet Protocol). However, in two years, only a quarter of businesses have ditched landlines.

John Griffiths, Chairman of National Business Communications, said: “Businesses need to start preparing for the switch off now. We anticipate a hold-up in 2025 due to unprepared businesses, which may mean the industry won’t be able to keep up with the number of last-minute orders, possibly leaving businesses without a service.”

According to the survey, mobile phones are the main way businesses plan to go forward with calls after the Big Switch Off (86.2%) followed by VoIP (62.5%.) When comparing the 2023 survey to the previous one, it appears that 44.3% more people are unsure about the way they’d make business calls than they previously were.

Griffiths added: “Although this may sound scary to businesses who still depend on landlines, there are alternatives such as the Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) and the transition can be made smoothly.”

The Big Switch Off also includes the Integrated Services Digital Network (ISDN), a digital version of the analogue phone line which was introduced within the PSTN in the late 1980s.

It’s not just landlines that will be affected in 2025 either as non-voice services connected to the PSTN and ISDN such as CCTV, alarms, faxes, EPOS machines and door entry systems will also be turned off.
