WEBINAR: Register for free and join the discussion with Alcumus and Mitie

Discover how to deliver unique value to your existing and prospective clients by efficiently achieving supply chain compliance with industry experts Gemma Lynch, VP of Strategic Accounts at Alcumus and Mark Hughes, Group Quality & Assurance Director at Mitie.

To compete effectively in the dynamic facilities management (FM) sector, organisations need to take a more proactive approach to identifying, controlling and limiting risks across the supply chain. As demand for FM services continue to pick up, and with a CAGR above 4.5% during 2022-2027, having the ability to deliver high-performing environments without compromising on safety, sustainability, or ethics is a must.

76% of businesses operating in the property/facilities management sector are looking to improve how they manage supplier pre-qualification processes in the next two years.

Are you satisfied with the current way of evaluating, monitoring, and managing your suppliers?

Alcumus already partners with four of the five largest global FM companies, helping them to reduce risks and manage both anticipated and unanticipated events in the supply chain.

Mitie introduces thermal imaging drone…

The facilities management company, Mitie, has announced the launch of the first thermal imaging drone to be used in the industry – corresponding with the growing popularity of implementing technology in FM operations.

The thermal imaging technology is the next stage of development for Mitie’s pest control drone service, which was announced earlier this year. The drone, named Inspire 1, will enable Mitie to deliver a wide range of services, from pest control to property and waste management. The thermal imaging applications for the Inspire 1 also include:

  • Concealed bird nesting in roof crevices.
  • Building damage inspections and maintenance, in areas that aren’t readily visible.
  • Wildlife management – thermal imaging for animal population control.
  • Safety at landfill sites – the drone can find hot spots that pose a fire risk.

Roofing surveillance to detect excess humidity and water cooling on flat roofs.

  • Thermal mapping – look at any heat leakage over the whole building to identify potential savings via improved insulation.

Regional director for Mitie’s pest control and drone operations, Gareth Davies, said: “The thermal imaging technology enables us to develop the precision of our existing drone fleet. The Inspire 1 will enable us to offer customers and increasingly comprehensive, safe and flexible service and is a great example of Mitie’s technological innovation in the FM sector.”

With the ability to reach 400ft, previously inaccessible places are reachable from the ground and without the need for specialist equipment. The small unmanned aircraft systems (SUAS) are operated by licensed Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) members, enhancing safety and reducing the cost of surveying at height.

New trailblazer course provides Mitie employees with ‘upskilling’ opportunity…

As a result of a recent survey conducted in the first half of this year asking ‘its people’ on what improvements they would like to see in the workplace, Mitie’s property management business, Mitie Property Services, has announced a partnership deal with the construction training experts, Geason Training to administer an NVQ Level 2 Trailblazer Apprenticeship in Property Maintenance.

The programme, which runs for twelve months, has already seen 705 operatives sign up and one of the key benefits for Mitie is that all employees are able to train on a flexible basis, and on ‘Mitie- chosen’ sites. Furthermore, through the partnership and ‘upskilling’ course, the goal is for Mitie operatives to learn how to manage situations that would previously ‘have fallen out of scope’.

Director of property services, Craig Boath, said: “At Mitie, we take pride in our people and the service they deliver. Not only will the trailblazer programme with Geason Training provide our people with the opportunity to be upskilled, but it will also improve the service that they deliver to our clients and customers on a daily basis.”

‘First Time Fix’ is a key performance indicator within the industry and the title embodies exactly what the programme aims to achieve: providing people with the skills to deal with issues at first point of contact.

Mitie awarded Carbon Trust Standard…

Recognised for its achievement in successfully managing, measuring and reducing its carbon footprint, the facilities management company, Mitie, has been awarded the Carbon Trust Standard for Carbon certification.

Mitie reportedly achieved an 8.1 per cent ‘absolute reduction’ in its footprint for the compliance period ending March 31, 2016; and also received the highest carbon management score in its sector.

Managing director of Certification at the Carbon Trust, Darran Messem, said: “As a business that provides professional facilities and energy management services, you would expect Mitie to be good at reducing energy use and carbon emissions from its own operations. We are therefore delighted to be able to award Mitie certification to the Carbon Trust Standard, independently recognising the real achievements the company has made in making year-on-year reductions in carbon emissions.”

He continued: “I would like to congratulate everyone in the business that has contributed to this award, as well as those working with Mitie’s clients to support them on their own carbon reduction journeys.”

The Standard is an independent certification awarded on a global scale of a company’s progress in taking action on greenhouse gas emissions; establishing that a company has adopted good industry practice and equally demonstrates strong achievements in managing and reducing its carbon emissions year-on-year.
